Men’s Health

Of all possible patient demographics, men are typically the most likely to avoid seeking medical attention or general health care.

Research performed by AARP revealed that only half of the men surveyed get regular checkups, and 72% would prefer doing unappealing household chores than see their doctor. We understand, and we don’t take it personally.

At Post Falls Family Medicine, we hope to show you that any perceived stigma or anxiety that you associate with visiting your doctor is unwarranted. We’re here to offer you patient-centered, comprehensive, compassionate, and confidential care. Your health is just as important as anyone else’s, and we offer a variety of services to help keep you going strong.

Physicals / Wellness Exams

Annual wellness exams focus on preventative care. We will cover things like prostate, colon and lung cancer screenings, lifestyle measures to prevent disease like nutrition and exercise, vaccinations, and other aspects of your care to help you avoid illness and be as healthy and feel as well as possible.

Our approach is patient-centered and individualized. We don’t just offer generalized health care. Depending on your age, general health, family history, and other individual factors, your annual wellness exam may look different from the next patient’s. This allows us to offer the care that is best for you, not what’s best for everyone else.

Prostate Screening

Most guidelines recommend that men discuss prostate cancer screening with their doctor starting between ages 45 and 50. Men at higher risk — including Black/African American men, those with a father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65, or those with certain inherited gene changes — may benefit from starting the conversation as early as age 40. Screening is generally not recommended after age 70–75, or for men with a life expectancy of less than 10 years.

Screening is done with a simple blood test called a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test. Your doctor may also perform a digital rectal exam (DRE) to feel the prostate for abnormalities. Large studies have shown that regular PSA screening can reduce the chance of dying from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer screening is a personal decision. You will talk with your doctor about your individual risk and whether screening is right for you.

Vasectomy

Vasectomies are an incredibly effective birth control method with over 99% effectiveness. They’re also a relatively quick, simple, effective, and safe procedure. During your vasectomy, the vas deferens tube, which carries the sperm from your testicles, will be severed and closed. The localized anesthesia you receive will prevent you from feeling pain during the procedure itself, and any discomfort or pain you feel after should be mild enough to treat with compresses and over-the-counter pain relievers.
